English 9: You did a wonderful job today. Well done.

I really appreciated your patience and maturity today as this situation continues.

As you know exams are cancelled. If we have school on Monday, we will write the Our Town / Steel Magnolias essay during class and it will be due on Tuesday. If we have school Tues. and not Mon. we will work it out. Some of you have finished, some of you are half finished so we'll get there.

Thank you for returning all your books and USSR books to the learning commons.

If today was our last day, please keep reading over the summer as you may have English 10 in Sept. and that will help you to be prepared. You can also keep adding words to your vocabulary list. Many of you got an A on today's vocabulary test so keep up the good work.

Keep all your essays, vocabulary booklets, and handouts as you can refer to them next year.

You will LOVE English 10.

See you in the fall (but I hope to see you Monday).

I will post a summer book list here soon.

AP Lit: Please, please return your books today . . .

The Lit texts outstanding are
  • Bamford
  • Brooker
  • Fischbach
  • Horne
  • Knoester
  • Loten
  • Prasant
  • Shih
Check lockers, cars, backpacks, bedrooms, friends' houses, Dad/Mom's house etc
Not returning these books means kids next year will not have a book as the Lit text is out of print.

AP LIT: Read Part 2, chapters 1, 2, 3

We read and discussed part two, chapter 1:

If you were absent, answer these questions:
How would a usual criminal respond to an 11 mt. long interrogation?
Howare the trial preparations like a game?
In what way is Meursault an outsider?
Why is the magistrate more interested in Meursault than the case?

Chapter 2, I read aloud and we made notes as we went along. Please get the notes from a friend. Focus on how Meursault adjusts to prison life.

Chapter 3, we started reading during class. Be sure to complete it at home. This chapter is the trial. Notice the light imagery. Notice the reactions of the jury and the witnesses. What is really on trial here?

AP LIT: COMPLETE THE 14 MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS

ON THE PRACTICE PROVINCIAL EXAM . . . WE'LL CORRECT THEM DURING CLASS AND YOU'LL HAVE TIME TO COMPLETE THE REST OF THE MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS. IF YOU WISH TO HAVE ME MARK THE PARAGRAPH OR ESSAY SECTIONS, DO THOSE SECTIONS TONIGHT OR TOMORROW NIGHT AND SUBMIT.

TOMORROW: We will finish reading the novel during class and have a wonderful discussion on Thursday while eating good treats.

English 9, Period 4 only

You have watched the film, completed the vocabulary list. Tonight, study your vocabulary words and finish your USSR book and complete the USSR form which is due on Thurs. It is okay if you have not finished the book you are currently reading. You may also use Our Town but you must include one other book. You had 9 days and two weekends of reading in June so I am expecting at least 150 pages for a C, 200 for a C+, 300 for a B and 400 for an A.

Tomorrow, we will write the essay in class.

Tonight: ORGANIZE YOUR QUOTATIONS ON THE BOOK AND THE FILM SO THAT YOU CAN CREATE A THESIS TO ANSWER THE QUESTION: DEMONSTRATE HOW WILDER AND ROSS REVEAL THEIR THEME THAT LIFE IS TOO PRECIOUS TO WASTE.

Below are the sample introduction and conclusion templates you will need to write your essay: I will hand out copies during class tomorrow BUT IF YOU WISH TO GET A HEAD START, BEGIN AT HOME.

Writing An Essay On More Than One Work

Introduction Template

Hook: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Thesis (without author title) Be sure that your thesis answers the question.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

First Body Paragraph Summary (PLUS AUTHOR AND TITLE, CITED CORRECTLY) ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Second Body Paragraph Summary (PLUS AUTHOR AND TITLE, CITED CORRECTLY) ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Repeat the thesis (usually in a shorter and more emotionally impactful manner) ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Sample:

Time marches on. In order to realize life's value, one must connect to one's dreams, one's family, friends or community; not to do so wastes this one precious life. In the play, Our Town, by Thornton Wilder, Emily does not realize until after her death how blind most humans are to the gift that life can be when one is committed to living life fully. Similarly, Shelby, in the film, Steel Magnolias, directed by Herbert Ross, reveals that despite a life-threatening disease, she is not willingly to hide in the closet and worry the way her mother does—Shelby commits to her dreams. It is easy to waste one's life due to the troubles and tensions one experiences but both Wilder and Ross declare that an even dangerous crime is to waste the one chance to vehemently explore the world. Time may march on but it is imperative not to waste one second.

AP Lit: Exam prep and read to the end of Book 1

Spoiler alert: Read the book before looking at the question below:

 ************************************************************************

Why does Meursault kill the Arab?

If you can answer this question, you can understand the novel.

English 9: Steel Magnolias . . . Our Town Quotes

Some students were struggling to find quotations from Act 3. Below are quotations compliments of David Lens:

"Do any human begins ever realize life while they live it? --every, every minute?" (100).

"Were you happy?"
"No . . . I should have listened to you. That's all human beings are! Just blind people" (101).

"How can I forget that life? It's all I know. It's all I had" (92).

"That's the happy existence that you want to go back to. Ignorance and blindness" (101).

If you have other key quotations from this act that you would like to add to this list, email them to me or hand me a paper copy. Thanks.

Remember, the essay question is

Demonstrate how the play, Our Town, by Thornton Wilder and the film, Steel Magnolias, directed by Herbert Ross, suggest that life is too precious to waste.

The key characters and settings of the film, Steel Magnolias, directed by Herbert Ross are

Shelby (diabetic)
M'Lynn (her mom)
Drum (her dad)

Truvy (hairdresser)
Spud (her husband)

Louise (Ouiser) friend of Clairee
Clairee (widow)

Annelle (new in town, works for Truvy)

Look for examples of people appreciating life and finding an optimistic view point.
Pay attention to Shelby's relationship to her mother.

Write down quotations as the film progresses.

Look for people who take risks, people who have given up. Find their reasons.
Look for good friends, good communication in families, artistic or spiritual dedication etc

Wed: Make sure you have all your Our Town work submitted. We will start the essay as soon as we finish the film. Check Friday's blog for the essay topic.

Thursday: Submit your USSR form for June. You may use Our Town and write down how many pages you have read during USSR if you have not finished a book.
If we have school next week, you can add to your form.

Thursday: Vocabulary Quiz, finish the essay

English 9, Our Town, Act 1

Period 4: I collected the Temple Grandin paragraphs today.

In both periods we wrote a paragraph in class and read Act 1 of Our Town. We did not do vocabulary today. I handed back the vocabulary quiz and yesterday's notes.

If you were absent today, you will need to do the reading and complete the paragraph at home and bring a note to explain the absence or if you participated in the student walk (with parental permission) write 250 words discussing what happened, who the speakers were, what you feel, any solutions you have etc.

The question is:

Read Act 1, called a Day in the Life, write down 5 quotations which you feel exemplify the little town of Grover's Corners.

Next, write a 250 to 350 word literary paragraph on the question below:

How well do the members of this town appreciate life? Explain using examples from Act 1. When you cite a quote from a play use double quotations only since the entire play is speech, the convention is to not use triple quotation marks to indicate speech.

Underline book titles or italicize if typing.

AP Lit: Study for your exam . . .
